A New Chapter: Foundations in Professional Sexuality Practices

Well… I’ve been a little quiet lately. There’s a good reason. I’ve been in school!

I’ve just completed the University of Guelph’s Foundations in Professional Sexuality Practices—and don’t let the rather academic-sounding name fool you. This has been one of the most engaging, challenging, fascinating, and transformative courses I’ve ever taken.

I learned about pleasure, consent, sexual health, gender, relationships, body diversity, ethics, sexuality, and professional practice. But perhaps more importantly, I learned a lot about myself.

​

The course continually challenged me to examine my own assumptions, biases, values, and social conditioning—and to consider how these might enter the room with me as a future sexuality practitioner.

​

One of the biggest lessons I’m taking away is that I don't need to have all the answers. I need to remain curious, ethical, reflective, compassionate, and willing to keep learning.

​

A huge part of the experience was the University of Guelph's Sexpert Series, which introduced me to an extraordinary range of thinkers and practitioners. And I have to give a special shout-out to Dr. Markie Twist, who created such a welcoming, curious, and intellectually stimulating learning environment.

I feel genuinely changed by this experience. I’m leaving the course with more knowledge, more humility, and—perhaps most importantly—an even deeper appreciation for the complexity, diversity, and beauty of human sexuality.

And I'm incredibly excited to bring this learning back into my work with Viva la Flying Vulva.

Oh—and one little detail I'm rather proud of…

I finished with a 99%.
